ARISE – Young Adult Catholic Faith Event

Join the first National Young Adult Faith Event by CYMI to Knock Shrine on Saturday, 7 March 2020.

Arise is an event for all of our young adults over 18, wherever they find themselves, to support them in their encounter with Jesus Christ, as their brother, friend, and saviour. It is a day full of hope and joy. Reflecting the experience of young adults today, Arise is designed to engage a range of young people, from those who are actively involved with their faith to those who feel Catholicism may no longer speak to their lives. It will give a greater sense of what it means to be part of a national Church, celebrating our rich heritage of faith and looking to the future together.

All young adults in your diocese are invited to attend!

All dioceses are encouraged to reach out to all young people aged 18 and over in their parishes to invite them to attend this special event.

There are some exciting activities and special guests arranged for the day. All in attendance will be encouraged to participate – singers, musicians, readers, prompters and audience warm-ups.

Arise is a project of Catholic Youth Ministry (CYMI). Through events like Arise, along with our annual training day, and networking meetings, CYMI gives Catholic youth ministry a voice in the Church and in wider society.

Keynote Speakers

Sr. Susan Jones CHF

Sr Susan, comes from Finglas in Dublin, is a Holy Faith Sister. She is the chaplain with the homelessness charity, DePaul Ireland, and is part of the chaplaincy team in the Technological University of Dublin. In her current capacity in DePaul she works with people out of home, accompanying them and supporting their spiritual needs. She has worked extensively in second and third level education, reaching out to young people of all faiths and none.

Fr. Brendan Kilcoyne

Fr. Brendan is a priest of the Archdiocese of Tuam. He has a wide variety of experience in many contexts, including parish, administration, and education. He is parish priest of the parish of Athenry. Fr. Brendan also served as the Diocesan Secretary for eleven years and was on the teaching staff of St. Jarlath’s College, Tuam, before serving as the President for five years. He has a very strong track record with youth ministry initiatives and is a dynamic and engaging speaker.

Bishop Michael Duignan

Bishop Michael is a native of Athlone, Co Roscommon. Ordained a Priest for the Diocese of Elphin in 1994, he has ministered in a variety of parish, administrative and educational contexts. He has been College Chaplain at IT Sligo and has spent many years as Lecturer in Religious Education and Theology and College Chaplain at St Angela’s College, Sligo. He has worked with Elphin Youth Ministry, Elation Ministries, and Youth 2000 Ireland as well as being a regular spiritual director to groups attending International World Youth Day. In July 2019 Pope Francis appointed him as Bishop of Clonfert.

Emma Maloney

Emma Maloney is a native of Maynooth and has a BA in Theology, MA in Poetry Studies and a Diploma in Spirituality specialising in applied youth ministry and facilitation. She has been actively involved in youth ministry since 2016, after taking a group of young people from her parish to World Youth Day. She is a mother to a wonderful son and shared her experience of having an unplanned pregnancy and volunteers for the Prolife Campaign. She currently is working for Youth 2000 which Emma describes as her dream job.

Arise Workshops

Workshop 1. Prayer

Discover how to engage with God speaking in different ways. In this Workshop we will be using an ancient method of reading known as ‘Lectio Divina’ – which literally means ‘holy reading’ – with which we will read an article/picture from the newspaper/story from another tradition. Lectio involves four ‘readings’ moving in stages from an exterior to an inner engagement with the text by which the reading is made your own as God speaks to each of us through it in a number of different ways. This is followed by sharing in the group what happened for you, how you are invited to respond and how we can support one another in that response.

Workshop Facilitator: Sr. Éibhlís NicUaithuas DC – Lectio Divina
Sr. Éibhlís is a Daughter of Charity, trained in spiritual accompaniment. She has a particular interest in bringing spiritual direction to people who are poor and/or marginalised and in encouraging young people to experience it. She works with young people using a group spiritual direction model and a form of Lectio Divina. She minsters part-time in the Dublin Diocesan Office for Evangelisation and Ecumenism expanding the Weeks of Guided Prayer in the parishes across the Diocese and as a chaplain in St Paul’s College, Raheny.

Workshop 2. Friends of Africa

Our motto is “small steps together”. When we work together, we achieve far more by way of creating a sense of ownership and empowerment, both for the African people we work with and for ourselves. It will take many years before the conditions in Africa improve in a meaningful way, but changes are happening slowly let us take a look at the small steps we can take together to make a real difference.

Workshop Facilitator: Friends of Africa
This is a development education and social action group based in the west of Ireland.

Workshop 3. Drumming

This drumming workshop immediately immerses you into the world of music-making, where you learn about rhythm and discover your own unique beat. A calm environment where you can feel comfortable expressing yourself and gain confidence in your own creative ability.

Workshop Facilitator: Anthony McNamee – Drumming
Anthony is a freelance drummer and music educator experienced in a wide range of musical styles and settings. He has worked with Dance Companies, Bands, Arts Festivals, Schools, Community Groups and those with disabilities. He is an experienced recording and live drummer and maintains a busy teaching schedule.

Workshop 4. Trócaire

This workshop explores Trócaire’s work, highlighting the impact of climate change on families in the global south and how climate justice relates to Laudato Si, Catholic social teaching and our faith.

Workshop Facilitator: Áine O’Driscoll – Trócaire
Áine holds a professional post graduate qualification in community and youth work and has worked in practice settings locally and internationally. Her current practice interests include examining the power of storytelling for advocacy and the role of development education in youth work. She is currently coordinating youth education and outreach programme in conjunction with Trócaire’s development education unit. This involves working with several youth work organisations and youth leaders across Ireland on a national programme of activity that highlights connections between global youth work and international social justice issues.

Workshop 5. Alpha Session

Alpha is a series of sessions exploring the Christian faith, typically run over eleven weeks. Each talk looks at a different question around faith and is designed to create conversation. Alpha is run all around the globe, and everyone’s welcome. It runs in cafés, churches, universities, homes – you name it. No two Alphas look the same, but generally they have three key things in common: food, a talk, and good conversation. It’s an opportunity to hear from others and contribute your own perspective in an honest, friendly and open environment.

Workshop Facilitator: Annette Evans – Alpha Workshop
Annette lives in Tullamore with her son Josh and daughter Sian. She began working for Alpha Ireland in 2014 as an Alpha Youth Midlands Coordinator. For the past 5 years Annette has coordinated Alpha Youth in 9 schools in the Midlands. Last May she was promoted to Alpha Midlands/West Coordinator where she oversees all Adult and Youth Alpha programs running schools and churches in her region. Annette is an active member of her home parish and leads two weekly youth groups. The J. Unit for 3rd to 6th Class students and The Junior Parish Pastoral Council for 1st to 6th Year students. Annette holds a degree in Theology.

Workshop 6. Youth 2000

A Vision for Youth in Ireland – For thirty years Youth 2000 have been brining young people together in the presence of Jesus. Centred on the Eucharist, devotion to Our Lady, and fidelity to the teachings of the Church, Youth 2000 hosts national and local festivals, as well as weekly prayer groups. They all bring young people together for faith and friendship. It works!

Workshop Facilitator: Peter Sands – Youth 2000
Peter is a teacher, a youth minister, and the national leader of Youth 2000 Ireland. He is also a GAA and rugby fan. He loves guitars, music, his family and friends, spending time in Adoration makes him happy.

Workshop 7. Music Ministry

How can we create space for music that really lifts hearts and minds to God? This fun, interactive workshop may be a good first step to answer that question.

Workshop Facilitator: Rev. Brendan Dowd – Music Ministry
Deacon Brendan is from Holy Family Parish in the diocese of Down and Connor where he serves as a Permanent Deacon. Brendan has been composing, recording and leading music ministry at both parish and diocesan level for thirty years. Brendan’s music has been broadcast on national television and radio. He has performed and given music ministry workshops across Ireland and in the USA and is a leading member of the Down and Connor Folk Group. Brendan has a desire to keep alive the genre of church music that has had such a profound impact on his faith and life. In 2015 Brendan released his second CD of original church music “In Him All Things.”

Transport, what time should you arrive and when does the day start and end?

We will have team members ready to welcome you when you arrive in Knock. They will direct you to the Registration Area. Registration will be open from 10:00am. There, you can pick up your pass for the day, as well as the Arise timetable and details of speakers and workshops. The cost of Arise is €10 per person. Tea, coffee, doughnuts will be waiting for you.

Buses and cars are asked to park in the North Car Park. It is sign posted but it’s easier to follow the signs to Knock House Hotel. Stewards will be on hand to guide attendees to the Basilica. A map of Knock grounds can be downloaded here.

Liturgies/Prayer
We will begin our day with a simple prayer. Adoration will be available throughout the day. Arise will conclude with the celebration of Mass. The main celebrant will be Bishop Michael Duignan. Photography and use of mobile phones are not permitted during liturgies.

Bring your lunch!
We ask that everyone brings a packed lunch. There will be a venue available should attendees wish to eat their lunch there. There are also many food outlets in Knock close to the Basilica as well as Café le Chéile within the grounds.

Extensive parking is available in the North Car Park, just behind St. John’s Rest and Care Centre.

Access
Arise is open to young adults over the age of 18. Young people under 18 will not be able to attend this year.

Wheelchair Access
Knock Shrine is wheelchair accessible. However, if you have any specific requests please contact the team.

General Responsibility
It is assumed that the group leader will accept responsibility for people within their group.

Area Evacuation
In the highly unlikely event of the St. John Centre having to be evacuated clear messages will be given by the Arise hospitality team. The team will be readily identifiable by their Arise t-shirts. They will advise you if it is a temporary or permanent evacuation, as far as they are able to do so. The gathering point for any evacuation will be in front of the Knock Basilica.

Arise is an event for people over the age of 18.

Social Media
We really hope that young people and leaders will use social media actively during the day. From the beginning of your journey to knock share a group selfie as you get in your coach or car. Use #AriseIreland and begin a dialogue with others who are travelling. At any point of the day when you are inspired feel free to share it. Use #AriseIreland Just not during the liturgy, please.
