Schools public speaking competition

St Ciaran’s College, Ballygawley in Co. Tyrone: How can we attract young people back into our parishes?

Knights of St Columbanus Public Speaking Competition

Encouraged by the positive feedback to the Centenary Public Speaking Competition over the past two years in which young people were given the opportunity to give language to their faith, the Knights of St Columbanus have decided to continue with this opportunity once more engaging with those in their final years of second level education.

Speaking topics

Students participating in the competition chose from a range of topics covering:

  • Young Christians;
  • Life and Family Issues;
  • Living the Christian life and Justice;
  • Peace;
  • Integrity of Creation.

After much research on the topics and supporting evidence from scripture and church teaching they make their presentations. The commitment of the youth to their faith and their strong beliefs have characterised this competition.

Some of the heats have already taken place. The list of upcoming heats is as follows:

  • Tuesday, 7th February: Convent of Mercy, Roscommon
  • Thursday, 9th February: Ursuline Secondary School, Thurles at 2pm
  • Monday, 13th February: Ely House, Dublin at 2pm
  • Thursday, 16th February: Ely House, Dublin at 2pm

Following these heats Provincial Finals will be arranged.

The All-Ireland final will take place on Saturday, 11th March in the Iontas, Maynooth University.
