On Saturday 18 April 2026, the Diocese of Kerry officially launched the Pope John Paul II Award during the Conference of Possibilities held at the Brehon Hotel, Killarney.

The conference brought together clergy, pastoral leaders and parish representatives from across the diocese to explore new opportunities for youth ministry and faith formation. More than twenty organisations working with young people were present, offering resources, ideas and practical support for parishes seeking to engage young people more effectively.
The event also marked the launch of the Spirit Youth Programme, a new personal and spiritual development initiative for young people aged 15 and 16. The programme will initially begin in several parishes across the Diocese of Kerry, with plans for further expansion as additional youth leaders are trained.
As part of this renewed focus on youth ministry, the Pope John Paul II Award was formally introduced to the diocese. The Award will be integrated into Spirit Youth Groups and will provide young people with opportunities to put their faith into action through parish involvement, social awareness activities and service to others.
Speaking at the launch, National Coordinator Tony Brennan outlined how the Award encourages young people to recognise and develop their gifts while becoming more involved in the life of their parish and local community.
The Diocese of Kerry acknowledged the generous support of the Knights of Columbanus, whose funding will assist with the introduction of the Award programme.
The launch represents an important step in supporting young people to grow in faith, leadership and service, while strengthening the connection between youth ministry and parish life across the diocese.
